It was definitely a crazy night as expected with guys pulling DNP's left and right. I thought I was doomed from the start with guys like LeBron, Kirilenko, Cassell, Diaw, Gasol, Camby, Kidd and Iverson all riding pine. The nice thing about having a bunch of teams is that an injury might hurt you on one team but it might help you on others (i think i'll coin this concept diversification!). But I wasn't exactly sad to see guys like Dirk, Brand, Mike James and Vince Carter, all guys that I don't have on any teams, take the night off as well.

As expected, Ray Allen saved my skin. As you'll see in a minute, a number of key categories were still up for grabs, and I had Allen going on 3 teams that were still in the hunt. I knew he'd be gunning for the 3-point record, and his 27-point, 7 3PM performance may have been the difference. Thank you, Jesus (Shuttlesworth).

Below is a full-blown detail of each league and the where the Spencers fell in each category. You'll notice that a lot of the leagues were very close, and the final outcome could've gone either way down to the very last game. I'm definitely not complaining that things turned out the way they did. However, I'm sure I'll spend the summer trying to figure out why Spencers5 didn't make it a clean sweep (by the way, I also went 4 for 4 on some yahoo leagues that I joined solely to test my draft model, including one winners league. Winning 9 out of 10 12-team leagues is completely unheard of. 10 out of 10 would've been hall-of-fame material.)

Since I can now be considered somewhat of an expert on the subject (as we've shown, it doesn't take much), I want to dive a little deeper into what it takes to win fantasy championships. Is it the draft? Is it shrewd trades? Is it keen line-up and roster changes? Over the next week or two, I plan on looking at each one of these key areas separately, then hopefully come up with a structure that allows us to isolate which area is the most important driver of fantasy success. Stay tuned.

Check out this article by nba.com fantasy guru Rick Kamla (he has a show on nba tv at 1:30 in the morning, so he must know what he's talking about). Kamla tried to prove that you could win your league by blowing off the shooting categories. I would advise against this, because you're automatically putting yourself behind the 8-ball. I try to do the opposite...find guys who contribute well across the other categories while also shooting a decent percentage. My teams averaged 11 pts in the FGP category and 9.7 pts in the FTP category, and in the only league I didn't win, the guy that beat me was first in both categories. I don't think Kamla's strategy leads to long-term success (and it didn't work for Rick in this instance either).
