Greatest Fantasy Basketball Seasons of All-Time (Well...Since 1979)

10/18/2006

I was perusing the different datasets on basketballmonster.com (a great site for managing your fantasy teams), and they have all sorts of fantasy rankings for different seasons, playoffs and even obscure things like Summer Leagues (Marcus Hatten was top dogg in 2006) and World Basketball Championships (Yao dominates!). Lots of cool stuff. They have previous regular seasons going back to 2000-01 (Terrell Brandon was #14!)...it's fun to look back and see who the top players were.

Being a die-hard Michael Jordan guy (heck, I even named my son Jordan), I grimaced as I looked at his rankings when he was with the Wizards (I heard a rumor that he actually played for them, but I must've erased it from my memory banks). In any case, basketballmonster has some guy named 'Jordan,Michael' ranked 41st in 2001-02 and (gulp) 69th in 2000-01.

So that got me thinking. As we're sitting here with the upcoming NBA season quickly approaching and LeBron James sits on top of most people's draft wishlists (although he likely won't be the top ranked player), imagine if fantasy hoops were around back in the mid-80's or early 90's (I've been playing rotisserie hoops since 1998, when I stumbled across this place called Yahoo on this place called the Internet. I can't imagine that fantasy basketball existed in any sort of broad scale much before that.) Well, I can give you a hint on how the draft would've gone: Pick #1. Michael Jordan. Pick #2...Not Michael Jordan. I think you would've had lots of under the table money flowing to commissioners to fix the draft order.

Thanks to this other cool site called databasebasketball.com, I was able to quickly pull every NBA players stats going back to 1946! And using my ranking system, I was able to rank order every player in the traditional 9 roto categories to determine what were the greatest fantasy basketball seasons of all time (For this first run, I started with the 1979 season). I also adjusted the rankings for differences in the league average production per 48 minutes each season, so an 'Adjusted' value of zero would mean that someone was equally productive fantasy-wise as the league average for each minute played. Positive is good. Negative is bad.

Not many surprises...MJ takes the top four spots, highlighted by his 1987 season of 34.98/5.5/5.9 (and more importantly, 53.5% FGP, 3.2 steals and 1.6 blocks!!!). How good is that? Well, last year Shawn Marion was by far the top fantasy producer and MJ was 25% better than Marion. People are expecting big things from Lebron this year, but he would have to boost his fantasy production by 59% to catch up to Michael (largely because of his FT%).

So here are top 50 fantasy basketball seasons in the last 26 years, adjusted for the league averages in each season.

Here's the top 10 players by the raw (non-adjusted) value each year dating back to 1979. Pat yourself on the back if you drafted Larry Bird in 1985...he was only THIRTY-TWO PERCENT better than the next closest guy. It's fun to see guys like Brent Barry, Donyell Marshall and James Posey pop up in the top 10 and then you realize it was only a couple years ago.

I can't escape without showing the worst fantasy performers. First the bottom 20 by raw rank. Congratulations to Chris Dudley. A negative value means owners would've been better off if you hadn't played at all.

Now on an adjusted basis...a negative value means they performed below the league average. Rony Seikaly was bad in 1985, but Desmond Mason nearly gave him a run for his money last year. If only Desmond had played in a few more games, we would've witnessed something special. It's one thing to provide no fantasy value in 9 minutes per game like Dudley...but to do it over 70 games and 30 minutes takes some serious effort (or lack of it). Seeing Desmond Mason's name up at the top can't help but remind me that the 'Talented Mr. Roto' (Matthew Berry) had Des listed as a sleeper last year in his preseason 'Guys I Love' column (which I dissected here...stay tuned for my analysis on his 2006-07 list) , then had the cajones to call his Mason pick a 'win' in his season wrap-up piece. We should count ourselves lucky that he 'likes to put his money where his mouth is' and is 'the only columnist who grades himself after the season on his ENTIRE list.'
